Krafft Milk
KRAFFT Milk is a mare’s milk replacement specially developed for horses. The composition is similar to natural mare’s milk and is suitable both for motherless foals and for foals whose mothers are not producing sufficient milk.

Motherless foals:
KRAFFT Milk provides the important antibodies naturally found in colostrum and which give the foal protection against pathogens. For motherless foals, it is important that the foal consumes 1-2 litres of colostrum, or plasma administered by a vet, ideally 1-2 hours after birth (max. 12 hours) to survive and develop its immune system.
In acute emergencies, KRAFFT Milk can still improve the chances of survival for foals whose mothers have died during foaling or during the foal’s first few weeks of life. In all such cases, rapid contact with your vet is essential!
Social contact with other horses is extremely important and should not be neglected for motherless foals. Try to find a playmate for the foal at an early stage and do not handle the foal more than necessary. The foal is already extensively imprinted and dependent on humans, and should instead be given the opportunity to identify with other horses.
General advice:
- During the first few days, the foal should be kept in a warm, draught-free and clean stall. The temperature can be reduced later. Use a heat lamp if necessary to keep the foal warm.
- Make sure the foal does not contract a navel infection. If necessary, dip the navel in diluted Jodopax solution.
- The young foal is unable to process large quantities of salt. The quantity in mare’s milk, and in KRAFFT Milk, is ideal for foals. If there is a salt lick in the box, you should position it so the foal cannot reach it until it is at least 6 months old.
Feeding instructions:
Dissolve KRAFFT Milk in water at 50°C in thoroughly cleaned equipment, and allow the foal to drink once it reaches 38-40°C (measured with a thermometer). Serve low down, and try to get the foal to drink calmly. Carefully wash the feed container, whisk and any other equipment used before using again.
Offer the foal soft hay of high quality both in terms of nutrition and hygiene. Ideal hay for young foals contains at least 70g digestible protein per kg of feed. Replace the hay regularly and ensure that there is always fresh water in a bucket positioned so the foal can drink with a natural head position (not too high). Straw should be dust-free and plentiful to avoid pressure sores.
Give the foal access to concentrates – such as KRAFFT Foal – after a couple of weeks. Start with small quantities added to the bucket after the milk has been fed. Gradually reduce the rations of KRAFFT Milk when the foal begins to eat sufficient coarse and concentrated food. If the hay does not have the right protein content, you may need to provide a supplement such as KRAFFT Muscle Up.
Remember:
- Prepare one meal’s worth of KRAFFT Milk at a time.
- Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the liquid.
- You should ideally use a bowl and a whisk that are easy to clean after preparing each meal of MILK.
- To ensure accuracy, you can use household scales.
- Feeding bottles intended for foals are available, but feeding bottles intended for lambs also have soft enough teats for foals.
